The Major/Minor Relationship

Minor and major scales have the same notes, but starting at different root notes. Use the circle of fifths to determine which major and minor scales match.

  • The “melodic” minor scale has different notes depending if melody goes up or down. The scale (A minor))ABCDEFGA is the “natural” minor. Many times this white key (on keyboars) passage is not the most impressive when played up and down. Try AGFEDCA descending and ABCDF井G井A when ascending. Sounds Blackmore/Malmsteen? Some speed and well chosen flats/sharps (black keys on keyboard in A minor) make instant classical style. Chopin, Listz…
