Compression Before Light Distortion

By Keith Handy

Try running through compression *before* a relatively small amount of distortion if you want lots of sustain and a consistent, even tone for melodic soloing.

I found this out the hard way but as a negative and not a positive. I use a compression pedal constantly because I can tailor my picking dynamics and keep my volume consistent. But found it really impacted my od and distortion pedals. The drawback is now I have to use several different types of od and distortion to get the tones I would have gotten just using the compressor. So I applaud your suggestion, just doesn’t work for me.
